Default cd/dvd burner question

Ok im thinking of buying a laptop and i was wondering, If you had a dvd driver (no cd burner/dvd burner) could you rip dvds to the computer ? or would you still need a cd burner for that?

so basically do you need a cd burner to rip dvds onto the harddrive?

and my second question is do you need a cdburner drive to burn cds? couldnt you just download some software and it will work? or do you actually have to have some specialized drive for burning cds?

1: and CD- Burner burn CD's
2: and DVD-ROM and CD-R combo can play DVD's and as well Burn CD's
3: a DVD-R/RW can do everything mentioned above + can Burn DVD's as well.

softwares are used to assist Burning Process, u cannot use software just to make a ROM drive as a writable drive.

so now a days, LAPTOPS are coming with DVD-R/RW, that means that it can Burn CD's DVD's and as well can play them. or in low profile, they'll come with a DVD-ROM and CD-Writer combo.
