I have never figured out the purpose of the digital and analog ports on the back of the CD drives that are supposed to connect to the sound card. Music can play whether or not either one is connected - so I don't understand why its there.
Ca somebody explain what it does and whether I need it?

If it doesn't have a good reason, I'll take it out to make the case neater...

For analog play is was needed to input the signal to the soundcard. It's not needed if digital. Most newer CDROMs and sound cards do not require this unless your going to be using analog audio or need a analog input for a device (Like MIDI).

So, what are some examples of where the Cd drive needs to output analog?

and,
should I leave the connection there or not?
