Question can't seem to find why my cd and dvd drives are in my computer

I thought as myself as a well educated computer user for a 15 year old, but i ran into a problem. i built a computer for my grandfather and it has operated very well for about a year. the other day i noticed that when i put in a disk nothing happened. (windows XP) i go into " My Computer" and everything seems to be right except WHERE ARE MY TWO DISK DRIVES! I have a standard Maxtor CD r-drive and a DVD +/- rw +/- R dual format internal DVD ReWritable Drive. i checked the system information and it reads the two cd drives but in front of them it has an "!" usually what that means is the driver hasn't been installed, but this where the funny part comes up IT'S INSTALLED. On this computer i particullary have two os's two different versions of windows xp this problem is ONLY happening on one of the versions. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
