yes you can, i've done some hardware modifications to a sony machine identical to this recently. make sure you set the correct jumper settings. make the DVD burner a master on the primary or secondary controller and set your previous cd-rom or dvd-rom as the slave.
i know what you mean though, it has the drive flaps that flip open right? dont worry it will fit. if you have too many drives you may have to choose taking out the cd-rom or dvd-rom to make some room. since dvd burners can burn cd's their is no worry if you must take out your cd-burner.
