Default burning problem

i have a optorite dvd 4x burner and i am having trouble burning cd's
and dvd's.I think it may be a bad hard drive but i am not sure. I used nero 6 burning rom, a copy of nero express that came with the burner and dvd express to burn dvds. i can copy data on a cdrw i can also copy win98se on a cdrw but when i try to copy a music cd to a cd it takes longer than usual and a error message is being displayed saying burn process failed.
please help!!!!!
