Burning data on a DVD-R

This might be a silly question, but can a DVD-R be used the same way a CD-R is used to hold regular data? I realize it needs to be burned in a DVD burner and not a CD burner. At 4.7GB, they'd be perfect to store large amounts of photos for archiving and such.

yes they can. all you need is the dvd burner and the correct software. nero of course is great but there are free programs you can use. if you have a look at the windows operating system sub-forum there is a stickied thread with a list of freeware on it including a list of burning programs.
