Default build a comp for $400?

i'm on a very tight budget here. first of all i don't play games. i do a little designing in autocad, surf the internet and watch movies. i'm just looking for something better than my 1ghz athalon with 256mb of ram. i want to keep that one though, so i will need a new case.
is it possible?

Of course. You should get the following, It will last a long time in what you do.

Processor - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-506&depa=0
Heatsink - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...106-037&depa=0
RAM- http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...141-424&depa=0
Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...131-489&depa=0
Video Card - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...142-011&depa=0
Sound Card - IF YOU NEED IT http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-177&depa=0
Case - http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...144-026&DEPA=0
That should do it, unless I am missing something. Those have the highest ratings in their class. You also save some of your $400 dollars.

you forgot hd, cd drive.
just scratch out the video card and use the money for a hard drive. you really do not need a sound card unless the motherboard already has intergrated sound.
or he can just buy a dell

Since you're only doing a little "AUTOCAD" now, build a $400.00 PC and you'll be doing alot less, "AUTOCAD".

Alright here's all I can do for $400:

CPU- AMD Athlon XP 2800+...$102
RAM- Kingston 512 MB (2x256MB) DDR PC3200...$62.50
Motherboard- Biostar M7NCD Pro...$52
Hard Drive- Western Digital 80 GB...$57.75
Video Card- eVGA GeForce MX4000...$36
Case- Antec w/ 350watt PSU...$59.99
Optical Drive- Sony DVD/CD-RW Combo..$33.50

Grand Total...$403.74

What do you think of it? I realize it's a little over budget, but not by a whole lot.

Look in the sunday ads and you can find some 60 dollar 512 mb ram and a 50 dollar 120 gig (or I've even seen a 160 gig) hard drive. That is assuming you can find money for rebates. I hate rebates.
