Brand Name Computers and PSU/Mobo Questions

I've heard alot about how plugging in a non-proprietary PSU into a MoBo that came with say, a Dell, HP, or Compaq, will fry the MoBo. If I get a new MoBo AND a new PSU, will I be in the clear then?
