Both CD drives not being detected...

My buddy just got this decent AMD machine for free through his dad.When you try to run a cd, you can hear the CD spinning, but nothing happens. Neither of the CD drives show up in 'my computer' either. Trying to run the drives from Start > Run doesnt work either. Both drives are connected to the motherboard and both have the power plugged in. Anyone know what could cause this? Anything you would reccomend to look at/try? Thanks in advance.

Are they both plugged into the same IDE cable? If so, the cable may be bad and you should replace it. If they are plugged into different IDE cables, make sure they are enabled in BIOS and that the jumpers are on the correct pins.

one should be slave the other master or both on cable select

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, maybe they are both set as master on the same cable. that would create a conflict
