Default Booting Up from a seperate Hard drive

Hey, I have a labtop at home, and have a seperate hard drive that I want to boot up from. Any Ideas on how to do this?

Any help would be great.

Is it a laptop hd? can you disconnect the hd in the laptop, that way you could just plug in the other hd, that is if its a laptop hd..,,.
