Default Booting From An External HDD

Hi, i have only one computer and want to use a external hdd to boot widnwos vista from so i don't have to make any changes to my current hdd. Last time i did a dual boot widnows diferent partitions and ended up having a massive system failure and was unable to boot either os(vista and xp)

So this time around i want to install vista on an external hdd can this be done what sort of exernal hdd to i need. I want all the info i can get .

without using a 3rd party boot loader i don't think it is possible. i don't know if it is possible to install to a USB external hdd but it would be possible with an SATA external hdd. i don't think the windows boot loader will allow you to boot without the hdd being attached.
