A bit baffled

I'm putting this in other as I am not sure what is going on.

My friend's laptop stopped booting randomly. He explained random BSODs beforehand and errors were popping up when I tried to reinstall two separate OSs, complaining about being unable to copy files to the hard drive (but only some files, not all). Assured it was a hard drive problem, I ran a diagnostic using UBCD, but, alas, the diagnostic for Hitatchi drives runs without error and says the drive is fine...

So...a possible false positive on the diagnostic....or something else?

Possible false... Try running Spinrite, or some other error checking software on the file system... Could be a bad sector as I am thinking the diagnostics you are proabably running only check the SMART status of the drive and not the file system it self.
