BIOS Updates... Are they really nesesary?

Not necessarily. Sometimes BIOS updates incorporate updates to make other CPU's work. Sometimes they are updated to include other fixes. Check the changelog. That will be the most important factor.
 
Like mak said, most of the time theyre used to update hardware support.

For example, i had to flash the bios on my board to get it to read the 5000+ BE because the chip came out after the board did. And if i want to run a phenom 9850/9950, i have to flash to a newer bios again.
 
I have yet to ever flash a bios. Generall the only reason to is if you are having problems with the board.
 
BIOS flashing is risky if you dont know what your doing, Only do it if it's essenail to add new hardware or to fix a problem with the board.
