benefits of a good motherboard?

Is the reason why most people recommend a more expensive motherboard like the DFI's for overclocking capabilities? Is it okay to go for a cheaper mobo if you don't plan to OC?

It depends how cheap you're talking. Obviously you'll want to go with a trusted brand (Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, and Abit are a few general ones). These will, of course, cost you more. Other features include ram transfer speeds, but these are determined by the chipset. For example, nForce boards have a faster memory transfer than other ones do and are actually pretty reasonably priced. You could check out one of those, as they also allow for overclocking.

Cheeper brands have a tendency to fail.
Great example of a horriable board is pc chips I have yet to see a working one thats more then a month old.

I agree that genreally you want to get a motherboard from (DFI, MSI, ASUS, GIGIBYTE, ABIT) There a few more if you looking for a server motherboard like Tyan but those are the normle good desktop makers motherboard.

Also generally speaking the nforce chipset are the ones you want to go for amd. If you looking for intel then intel also makes some good chipsets.
