i currently have my system running on a single 40gb hd and i want to backup my data on a 3gb harddrive , just the system files so if my other harddrive fails or gets fried i will have a backup because i dont have a windows disk. would it be possible to copy all the neccesary files needed for windows xp to the 3gb hardrive? i googled it but couldnt find anything =/

Yup, you can. There is an built in BackUp utility with windows XP. Use the 'system backup'[Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Backup.] to backup your current system configuration. It will create a single file with .bak extension . You can copy this file onto your 3 GB HDD.
Use the same backup utility to restore your system configuration with the .bak file..
