AUX In connector useful?

I was wondering what the aux in connector(internal mpc3 connector)is used for.
I have it connected from my dvd drive to the aux in on my audigy.
Is it really necessary?
Will you be getting only analog audio when playbacking dvds?

Its not necessary. Its for like playing music CDs on the drive, thats why theres also a dial in the front.

But cant you play cds without it?

you could, just that you need to access the cd from within the os
