Default ATI RAdeon 9800 & Sony

hi guys,
i've ATI Radeon 9800 128MB video card and my monitor is Sony HS-Model 17" Flat Panel LCD SDM-HS73/L. I would like to view in 16:9 aspect ratio w/o using the stretch funtion of the monitor. is it possible to do that? the card manual says 1920x1080 resolution is for 16:9 view but i don't get that. my os is M$ Window$ XP Pro.

my old Nvidia card would give me 16:9 w/o stretching the display. plz help.

maybe the new video card does not support that feature without going to a higher resolution like you said. you did switch from nvidia to ati radeon, completely different GPU chipset manufacturers.
