Exclamation Athlon XP vs. Athlon 64

I know that athlon 64's are better than xp's so if you came here

argue about which one is better this isn't the place to do it.....

anyways my situation is that i'm upgrading my computer very

soon and i have a low budget around $350-$400.i'm getting an

amd for sure but i'm debating about getting an xp or 64. I still

need a mobo, ram, power source and a video card too. My prime

objective is to upgrade to a pc reliable enough to play battlefield

2 and some other games that are coming out in the near future

at a resonable speed. would it be worth it to get a high end xp

like a 3400+ or to save up more money to get a low end 64 i.e. a

2800+ and all the other components i need with it.

I wasn't sure what would be better after hearing ppl say that 32

bit gaming won't be around much longer.l I have looked

pricewatch.com and i see that they have very low prices..that

could be a possibility. Also i know it would be better to get a new

case to build this pc with but could i use like a compaq case with

an atx board ? If you feel like taking the time could you guys give

me an list of reliable parts that will fit my budget or at least

not more than $475

Thank you for your help

id rather get a 64-bit, if you can afford it, if not, a top notch athlon xp is nothing to gripe about. they run pretty good. but overall, 64-bit's are a lot better then xp's

In your situation I would personally get a midrange Athlon XP between 2400-2800 and put the majority of your funds in the video card. Games will run fine on any XP and you'll need a more powerful GPU before a powerful CPU.

Tigerdirect.com has a xp2900 with mobo for $79.99 after rebates ($159.99 before). Assuming you don't coun't that extra $80 in your budget you could still get this stuff from Newegg like I did

TwinMos 512mb DDR Pc3200 $41.25
Powersupply for about $40
eVGA 6600GT 128mb Retail $149 (164 before rebate)

Before shipping
$310.24 ($405.24 before rebates)

Spend a extra $80 on a amd64 setup or get another ram stick with the money left over.
Or don't get a powersupply and get a .Aspire (Turbo) X - Infinity case for $52 ($55 before rebate). The power supply ain't the greatest but it works good for my friend and looks great and is available in some cool colors.

wow dude, random post... he only has 450 dollars to spend... if you get a 6800GT, you'll be stuck with a 1.3GHZ celleron or duron, a crappy mobo, a LEGO case, and some 250 watt PSU and some PC133 RAM... you know what my point is...

ok, here's what i came up with... some1 get some good 512MB ram for 60 dollars or so...

ECS K8T800-A Socket 754 VIA K8T800 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail --- $55

REFURBISHED: eVGA 128-A8-N350 Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM --$131

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 754 Processor Model ADA2800BOX - Retail -- $121

Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM --$56

Total Price - $368

if your case is ATX, the it will fit.. but right now cases are jokes, you could get a really nice one for $30...

this system should run BF2, Doom 3, HL2, fine....
