Atari joystick on computer?

Hi,
Is it possible to take a joystick from a Atari or Commodore 64 and plug it in the serial port of a computer and make it work?

Maybe with right drivers...

Someone knows if it possible?

You can get adapters to plug in playstation and xbox controllers, but atari and commodore is pretty old. I'm not sure if there is an adapter or a controller out there for what you want. I know if you knew assembly good enough, you could take apart the joystick and hook it up lead by lead and program it to work for the way you want it to. I know my buddy used to do that with NES and SNES controllers and game pads.
