I was wondering what the best way would be for me to transfer tapes from my sony camcorder (analog hi8) to my PC. I plan on burning them to DVD, but first things first. The camcorder only has composite cables, no firewire or USB. What would be the best way for me to proceed? I have looked at this Pinnacle video editing box, but was curious to see if I have any cheaper alternatives. I am most interested in keeping the quality as good as possible.

I see that the firewire version has video formats for mpeg/avi, etc. whereas the USB 2.0 only supports diff. mpeg formats. Any suggestions? Thx.

no, just get something like this... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=15-100-103&depa=0

u can find others like that at newegg by going to 'all catagoys' at the bottom thy have 'video devices'

or just search for 'tuner card' or 'capture card'
---------------------------------------------------------------------
the card is just an interface for u to get the video connected to the computer.

u can capture and and convert the video however u like it, softwere help and totorials can be found at sites such as...

www.videohelp.com and www.doom9.org .....thy also contain lots of usefull conversion softwere.

EDIT: just so u know... the order goes like this, u need to... capture, convert, then burn to dvd/cd. some programs simplify this for ppl who are just looking for the basics. im not familiar with the specific program names, cause iv never needed to use them.

Thx for the reply. I found this, I think its along the lines of what I am looking for: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-144-502&depa=0

this is video convertor my friend, not capture card, this will only work as if u have like NTSC TV-Capture card already installed, and u want it to work on PAL etc.

in this case even, you'll be requiring the capture card anyway.

whatever jolancer has adviced is the right choice, rest u can get many other manufacturers etc, depending on your budget.

Mel Function,,,whats that man, ur all other posts are difficult to understand as u r supposed to help ppl here rather than making them confuse, as if this is a computer forum, doesnt means everyone coming here is PC freak. bring down oneself to their level of understanding things. (Thanks in advance for that)
