Default AMD launching dual core Athlons tomorrow

I cannot believe that someone has not posted this yet!

From theinquirer.net:
Quote:
THE WORLD+DOG already knows that AMD has its Opteron dual-core CPUs ready and that it's set to launch them tomorrow. But not many know that AMD is launching dual-core desktop CPUs as well.

You do now.

AMD says production-ready CPUs are now shipping to some leading OEMs and system builders world-wide. General system availability is scheduled for June, we learned.

The chippery will be available for both mobile (Desk top replacement) and desktop computers and feature enhanced virus protection and 'Cool 'n' Quiet' declocking marchitecture.

Its pretty much two Athlon 64 stitched together and connected with Direct connect (m)architecture, we understand.

We learned that dual-core Athlons and Opterons will be compliant with existing motherboards. You will need a bios update to make them work but thats about it.

AMD taped out its first dual cores in June 2004, first demonstrated this marchitecture in August 2004 and will claim to be the first to ship such marchitecture for servers and workstations starting from tomorrow the 21st of April.

That should nibble at Intel's todger.

Sounds like the dual-core version of the Turion won't be on the slate, but basically everything else will.

theinquirer.net also posted this article:

Athlon FX 55 to remain fastest for games

Exclusive Dual-core Athlons not for spotty gamers

UNLIKE ITS BLUE competitor, AMD won't launch or recommend a dual CPU for gaming just jet. It kind of surprised us but AMD knows that its Athlon FX generation is faster than its tomorrow-to-be-launched dual core Athlon X2 CPUs.

AMD claims that its Athlon FX 55 is the fastest gaming solution available and that if you want the latest and greatest performance then you have to get one of those.

The company warns that Athlon FX 55 will end up approximately 15 to 20 percent faster than dual-core CPUs on PC games. Its message is clear: if you want to play games and get the best scores you have to use FX not dual-core X2 chips.

The dual core X2 CPUs are more multi-tasking oriented and games are just not that. So gamers need not be too excited about dual-core; it's for multi-tasking guys, rendering guys, digital video editing guys, database guys but not for games guys.

It takes time for new processors to filter into the channels. OEM builders get them first, then major players (like NewEgg, ZipZoomFly, and others).

Give them a few weeks, and you'll start to see a few Venice cores. A few months, and they'll be everywhere.

I believe gaara posted this a few days ago, not the exact article but the fact that it was being released.

You won't actually be able to get the dual cores for a few more weeks. Venice and san diego was released on the 15th and you still won't find them at newegg yet. Like trotter said it's gotta fill the market first
