Default amd athlon 64 3000+ or amd athlon xp 3200+

which one is better, they are pretty much the same price. i need a cheap cpu for my shuttle im building. i know that the 3000+ supports 64bit but the xp 3200+ clocks at 2.2ghz while the 64 3000+ is clocked at 1.8ghz.

In terms of CPU speed, they'd be pretty close. The XP would probably win in arithmatic and multimedia benches, but it'd be best just to go to the AMD64 platform in your case. The memory bandwidth of the AMD64 for would be significantly better than the XP though because of the on-die memory controller. I'd suggest Socket 939 if you weren't already looking at that.

It's not faster when the XP has 400MHz over it. The memory bandwidth is faster, but yes when 64bit windows come out, you can't really say the 'AMD64 is faster' cause the XP cant run that windows period lol
