Question Alternative microphone

I was just curious as to how many people out there are aware of this. You can plug a set of headphones into the microphone port and then use them as a microphone. Is there anyone out there that can actually explain to me how this works, and why it only works through one of the headphones and not both?

yes I was aware of this, it won't pic it up anywhere near how a microphone does though as far as clarity goes....think about it....what is a microphone but simply a speaker and wire....same as headphones, although I really don't know more in depth besides that

A mic is nothing but a specialized speaker, I have known about this for years.

If your mic goes out, you plug your headphones in
