There are special "Y" cables for cable select (40wires)
All 80wire cables support cable select.

Sorry to bump this, but I've tried everything.

Right now I have the second HD hooked up to the IDE at the end of the cable with the jumper set to master. The DVD drive is not connected at all. Dell asked if I wanted to go into "setup", and I did. I don't know if that = BIOS, but I did not see an auto detect.

I can't reach the jumpers on the DVD drive in the ****ty Dell case, so I'm not sure what to do about that. But the DVD drive is not a pressing issue (I could theoretically get an IDE/SATA converter anyway, no?). I just don't see why this HD isn't connecting or responding.

It has in the past, when I first set it up and the DVD drive wouldn't be recognized.

Sorry again for bumping, but a lot of thanks to whoever can solve this ^_^;

That menu was probably your BIOS. Look in "Standard CMOS...." menuitem.
