I have a Compaq computer which I upgraded to WinXP. It has an Acer 50x CD Rom drive which worked with Win98. It will not read any disk now. XP says it is working properly. I have removed and re-installed it, tried using the drivers that came with it with no sucess. When you insert a disk, the light blinks a few times, then nothing. Double clicking its icon brings up a "insert disc" message. Could it be it simply isn't compatible with XP? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

i had this same problem with my CD ROM. Everything looked like it was OK but the drive refused to read any CD. After a lot of usless work i realized that my cd drive motor had locked up so the CDs were not spinning.

Anyway, long story made short: Can you hear the CD spinning in the drive?

did you load windows XP with this drve?

Thanks for the replies. Hercules may have hit on it. I cannot hear the drive spinning and no I loaded XP with the other drive. I have tried program discs with auto run with the same results. I am going to pull the case apart to install some more memory so I might as well just change the drive too.
