6600gt & BF2

my friend got bf2 recently, and has an ati 8500 which plays good on low settings, but he wants to play on better graphics. his price range for a new card is 150-200. Will a 6600gt play at high settings with good fps? he has p4 2.4ghz and 512 ram

gaara 07-04-2005 02:58 AM

A 6600GT should be able to play it on high settings, you could probably get a 6800 for $200 which would be more powerful though with 12 pipes and 256bit memory.

no_Wedge 07-04-2005 02:59 AM

wait i always heard gt is better than non gt even if it's a newer card

gaara 07-04-2005 03:21 AM

Look at the specs and you'll see the 6800 is the better card

6600GT
500/1000 128bit memory
8 pipes

6800
350/600 256bit memory
12 pipes

The clocks on the 6800 are about twice as effective as the 6600GT clocks, so you can double them and find it's a faster card, and it has more pipes as well. For only a bit more you can much better performance, and you can overclock and try soft modding to 6800GT.

dude pny 6800 newegg $$$$$156$$$ retail will run bf2 maxed out but be sure to have it least 1gig of memory or you will be loading the level during game play off ur hd which is makes the game laggy.. the 6800 kills bro its got 325mhz core 700mhz memory and its 256bit its got 12 pipelines but can be unlockable to 16 pipes. it gets 22.4gig bandwidth 6600gt only gets 14gig

I don't doubt you, but how do you figure that out?

gaara 07-04-2005 03:45 AM

128bit vs. 256bit, the clock cycles are more effective in 256bit equipped memory, and gain an edge over the 128bit memory. Think of it like AMD and Intel, the architecture in each core is different and some use less clocks to achieve equal or greater speed.

Alex81388 07-04-2005 03:51 AM

So since the archetechure is 'twice' the bitsize, then you can double the mem and core speeds every time?

I dont see 6600GT on the list :(

dhw200 07-04-2005 08:21 AM

that is such BS. People are running it fine on their 6600 GTs. I run it on my X850 XT, and i dont see that on the list either.

burned-ati 07-04-2005 09:57 AM

no gara ur wrong this 6800 is 256 bit and 6600gt is onlt 128 bit but the 6600gt has high mem clocks and core clocks to make up for that lack of 256 bit, and the 6800 has lower clocks but is 256 bit. but the 6800 does not double the 6600gt.

burned-ati 07-04-2005 09:58 AM

but it is a small bit better

dhw200 07-04-2005 10:07 AM

256 bit > 128 bit

Thats good because i intend to get it at the end of the week. Gotta wait for my DVD drive to arrive first.

The 6800 is still the better card and a steal for it's recent price drop right now, especially if you are able to softmod it to a GT.

Heyyo,

Yeah, the pipelines and the bitrate impact preformance more than how fast the clock cycle is. I mean, on me old 3dfx, an increase in 60MHz only gave me like, 3F/S extra at the most... needless to say I tried higher (hey, I was a comp n00b and I thought I was "uber 1337 d00dz") and that card diddn't last much longer.. lol.

I dunno if the core of the 6600gt and the 6800 are different, but I bet they would be. An in the end, for vidcards? the better the core? the more likely it'll take onna vidcard with a weaker core.

I'm sure the 6600gt would run great on BF2 since it is nvidia-optimized. If it game off low framerates I'd be shocked. Remember to upgrade your nvidia drivers to the latest ones to get you as close as possible to 100% compatibility.

burned-ati 07-04-2005 03:24 PM

i just bought a 6600gt evga from newegg guys!! cant wait to get it lol i spent 162.00$ total with shipping for a retail version

Charbo 07-04-2005 09:45 PM

also that list is crap there are many cards not on the list that play the game just fine.

MADWAD 07-04-2005 10:31 PM

My XFX 6600gt runs BF2 with no problems at all at high settings.........i could swear the 6600gt was on that list???????
