I would be going for one the the following :-
1. External 3 1/4 harddrive as 2.5 drive with the higher sizes are pricy.
2. External DVD Burner

I am getting an Ipod 60GB instead of a portable HD, before I put any music or anything on it, I can use it as the middle man between the 120GB laptop HD I am buying and the 40GB that is full currently on my laptop.

ipods are very expensive portable hdd's, but they look cool and play music.

I put together a 80gb External HDD for $120.

Well I am buying a 60GB ipod video anyways soooo...... Plus..

They require no external power
They require one USB port rather than 2
They play videos
The new iPod video's are 50% slimmer than the old one's
And they are just cool in general

doing it yourself is very good because it turns out so much cheaper than if you buy a prebuilt one.
