I've seen a wireless network be connected at about 7 miles where I used to work.

Granted, the access point was on top of a grain elevator with an amp, and the customer had a high gain antenna without anything in the line of sight. It was not a great connection, but they could surf at half a megabit (we had a bandwidth limiter on them, so I don't know if they could have gone any faster).
