Wifi Lan Problems Connecting To A Psp

Hello everyone! I've bought a PCI lan card to play online with my PSP wich has a built-in WIFI card using the 802.11b connection. Now, I must say I know nothing about wifi lan, I used to have a wired LAN and had no problems with that.
What do i need to connect the PSP to my PC? They both have WIFI lan cards in them but my PC (using WIN XP PRO) has the little icon on the sys tray that shows the WIFI logo with the little red X on it. I'm guessing that it means it is off, but when I try to turn it on it says it cannot find any networks. What can I do?
Do I NEED a Router for this?

I think you have to connect the PSP with a wireless connection (most likely a router).

Rember that your PC does not assign IP addresses and sort out packets by itself.
