Default Why such a low framerate?

I have a computer with the following specs:

Amd Athlon 64 3700+
1 gig dual channel ram
Geforce 256mb 7800gt

I get down below 40 fps during firefights in cs:s and unreal tournament 2004 with all settings max and a resolution of 1152x864. Shouldn't i be getting higher? My 3dmark05 score is 7350. My fps ranges from 40-200 fps.

Is it overly low fps or just in firefights?

What type of crap do you have running in the background?

viruscan?

How many processes are running?

Is it a HDR map?

There isn't any processes running in the background. I get about the same fps in a hdr map. It only drops during action. The rest of the time it is 80+ fps.

is it reading from the hard drive? I bet it is. Since you have it all cranked, you're using more than a gig of ram, and you get that slow point when it's trying to get information from the HDD.

No, what I mean is... When you're in this fire fight, and the refresh rates start dropping, listen to your hard drive and see if it's grabbing at information.
