They are ide drives.

What model of dell do you have?

Edit: Have you done a system restore to a point in time prior to removing programs?
How to restore Windows XP to a previous state

I restored back to Friday, which is both the furtherest restore point I have saved and the day before I erased programs.

Didn't work. D and E still missing.

I haven't used my CD/DVD drives in a while, its possible its been like this longer. I honestly don't know.

when you tried to update the drivers did you allow xp to look online or search windows update for updated drivers?

Did a little more googling and I found a fix. It seems to have worked.

I ran a file in the first post on this blog and it worked. Downloaded, ran a few steps, restarted computer and it recognizes the D and E drives.

Here's the fix in Post#1 for anyone else's reference:

DRIVER NEEDED: Any Company All Optical drives (Windows XP Home) [IDE] - DriverGuide Support Forums

Thanks for help guys and I'll repost in this forum if I have future problems........
