What part of my laptop is this, and how can I fix it?

Pieces of the laptop cover have been chipping off there for a while, but today, a large piece of the cover chipped off (pictured).

The whole thing is out of alignment, and something like a joint seems to be out of place. I'm concerned now, because I can see some stuff that looks like it's important. What's exposed?

Can I cover it up with tape or something in the mean time? What would be a long term fix?

EDIT: It's a Toshiba Satellite C55-B

Broken hinge and case, I would dispose of it.

The hinge itself might be o.k.
You can get a new bottom on ebay and use that to repair the laptop, You can find new hinges, and a a new palm rest too.... depending on what is needed for repairs. List the entire model number so we can help you locate these parts. Depending on supply/demand these parts may or may not be easily obtained for replacement parts
