I bought a ps2 optical mouse the otherday... i tried it on and it worked. however, when i restarted, it stopped working???"

it only work when

1. another mouse is used upon booting
2. the system is already "on" and i attach it in place of the other one.....

It is USB? Place the mouse in the Primary USB slot on the back of your case, unless it is ps/2(Which I doubt). Take out the ps/2 mouse and reboot. should work fine.'s ps/2 and so you need to install the dirvers for that mouse that came with it.

Default PS/2

its PS2 and it doesnt have a driver with it....

Does XP require drivers for mice?

But the thing is, it works when i replace the old mouse in while the system is turned on....

XP will install a generic driver for most common hardware, however you may want to try and find another driver for it.
you can check out driverguide to see if there is one for your mouse, or check the manufacturers website
