Video card....fried??

So i smelled a strange burning smell, and all the sudden my computer shuts down, i pop open the case to find my video card so hot it wasn't even touchable...i haev a radeon 9800 pro, is there any way my fan could have died without anything else malfunctioning, or is this due to a bigger problem? i checked and the extra power supply was hooked up, anyone ever heard of this or have any idea what may have caused the malfunction before i go out and get a new card?

I dont know but the 9700-9800 series is unstable, I have a 9700pro, They even stopped making them here in Australia.
