Default video card compatibility

I'm trying to figure out what kind of video card will work in my system. The motherboard is a Shuttle AK31 and the manual says it has a 32-bit 4X AGP slot.

Here are my questions:

1. will a card that says 4X/8X work (my last card was a 2X/4X)?

2. Does the 32-bit part refer to the memory interface, and if so do I have to get a 32-bit card, or will 64-bit, 128-bit etc. work?

I recently bought a 4X/8X 64-bit card, and my monitor puts up a message saying there's no video signal. I'm trying to decide if the card is defective and I should just exchange it, or if it's just not going to work and I need to return it and take a hit on the restocking fee.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What motherboard do you have? Giving the rest of your system specs will really help us solve your problem.

Most 8x cards are backwards compatible as long as the video cards voltage requirements are congruent with your mobo's.
