My PC has a pair of ASUS DRW-1608P3S internal DVD-R drives.
This morning, I discovered that they had both stopped working. When I inserted a disk into either of them, the respective disk light came on but... nothing. When I tried to Explore the drive, it appeared to be an empty volume even though there was definitely a valid disk in the drive.
I checked the cabling and there didn't appear to be any problems with either end of the power or data cables.
I tried installing the latest drivers, but no dice.
I tried using Device Manager to uninstall the devices and then rebooted. Windows detected the 'new' hardware, correctly identified it and... again, nothing.
After much messing about and a lot of amateur fumbling, I suddenly found that one drive began to work again... but only
with games. Every game CD or DVD I tried worked perfectly - first time every time. However, it refused to recognise any
music CD or data CD (e.g. photograph compilations and
backups of My Documents).
The other drive, however, remained resolutely silent.
All in all, it's very bizarre and perplexing problem. Any suggestions that anyone can pass my way would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
