USB Harddrive Problems

I have a usb harddrive that is not reconized. It was shut down improperly. How do I get it to shut down correctly if it won't find it? All the usb items work on all the ports. This drive works on other computers.

try going into device manager when its plugged in and seeing if it says unknown devices with a yellow ! next to it.

to open device manager go to start >run then type devmgmt.msc

is it just specifically the one port that it is not working on? if so the port must be faulty. also do as ' baronvongogo' says.

I tried that ,it says no drivers are installed. The disk that came with it is for win98. Doesn;t winXP have the drivers with it.
