USB DVD Burner Freezing Windows

I have a USB 2.0 DVD/cd-rom burner connected to my computer. I have no problems except that when I put in a DVD movie it takes about 2 minutes to recognize that it is a DVD and prompts my auto-play feature.

During this time my desktop freezes and I can only make commands from my Task Bar and Start Menus. Anything that I open up on my desktop freezes and is unuseable.

I am running Windows XP on a Gateway computer with a 1.8GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. I have updated my firmware for the device and the driver is current.

Any ideas on what I can do to solve this problem?

are your sure the firmware you updated was exactly the correct one?

Yep, it was for my specific drive.

USB optical drives do not normally perform that well. perhaps you could try an older version of the driver. sounds stupid but i think its worth a try
