Default Urgent Problem with Tablet PC

My friend has an Acer Tablet PC and he recently installed SP2 on his computer. This has proved to be a fatal mistake because his computer doesn't even boot to the desktop anymore.
He has the recovery disks, but the only option it is letting him do is to format the hard drive. Is there a way to save all his files?
Please help.

Does his disks allow him to do a repair? If not try and get hold of a windows xp home or pro disk (whichever he has) and boot from it.
Once the screen comes up with the option to repair press the R key. Once at the command prompt type chkdsk /r and let it run.....

Can you boot into safe mode? If so uninstall SP2 from add/remove programs.
