ran a different memory test, turns out 1 stick of ddr2 was bad...i ran tests with only the other stick installed and it passed
i was told that installing windows on bad ram can have serious after-effects and that even with good ram it wouldnt help on that install, so im reformating and reinstalling windows again on good ram this time. i hope this works
