Default Took my optical drive out, and windows kept crashing

Ok here's a strange setup I have never seen before. My son borrows my optical drive from my computer for a moment, I tried playing Star Craft II and talk on Skype, which I have done before, and my comp freezes. As things went on it progressively got worse, not a virus but windows ( WIn 7 64bit) problem. thought for sure I would have to format and reinstall, at one point , it wouldn't even run in safe mode, I put the optical drive back in this morning, and now its like it all never happened.Never seen an operating system go so stupid just because an optical drive was missing.
