My system hangs randomly, including during the bios bootup. I tested the memory and with bootable mem tester cd. Said it was perfectly fine. It got so bad that we couldn't get pass for the bios bootup 90% of the time. Anyways I managed to flash the bios with a new update. System stay stable for a little longer, but not much, Can make it into xp.

System is
MSI K7T-266 pro2
AMD 1400xp
512MB of Kingmax memory (I think, bought this stuff 5 years ago)
Nvidia Fx5200 AGP

I am thinking its the board, the onboard audio kinda works sometimes. usually only left speaker. So I put in a SB audigy and use that. Unfortunately from time to time will get high pitch random noises that try to deafen me.

Also this board had problems with a Geforce440MX previously, half the time when I would reboot or start the computer, it would give the no-video card beep of death over the pc speaker or show good old ascii characters that resembled my old BBS title message and just sit there. Sometimes it would take 10 reboots to get a successful one

Anyways guys, we are on a very limited budget here and wondering if I should chance getting a new Socket A/462 board?

Any chance CPU is dieing?

i highly doubt the cpu is dieing , its more likely the mobo or psu

have a good look at the mobo (preferably with a flashlight) and look for bad capacitors see these examples:

download everest http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html , get into computer-->sensor and take a screenshot and ill let you know if the voltages are stable

and incase you will find bad capacitors, your options are
1) have em replaced at an electronic repair shop shouldnt cost much as capacitors are cheap
2) buy a new mobo (might be more expensive then #1 , be aware that socket A/462 mobos are no longer being manufactured some stores still have some in stock but thats about it) this one looks pretty good http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA22187

It's uncommon for CPUs to die, relative to other parts of the computer.

If it is hanging up even during BIOS, then it's definitely hardware, and not Windows.

It's always nice to have extra parts lying around so that you can try out different parts to see what the problem exactly is. From what you are saying, it sounds like your motherboard might be toast.

in the good old days techin', I usually had between 10-30 systems kicking around but alas, I am not a tech anymore. Nor do I have much for hardware, just my main system which is different socketed and different memory type. The Xp1400 system is my handmedown to the gf. Going to try buying a motherboard. Dunno how much more my computer can take of her.

As for as the Original Poster not being able to complete an XP install or linux sounds like a memory issue..... If you have a bad stick the OS is gonna stop... Trust ME...
