so i caved in and just switched the PS out for a 400watt (more stable for the system i guess) but it still fries my mind how the 500watt worked for like 4 months then all of a sudden needed to go through all that just to power on the mobo to post

PSU's do go bad. The off brands, ever so quicker.

Never attempt to update the BIOS of your computer if you are having power problems! If the system were to power down during the update your system would be "bricked" and no longer bootable.

He never had a problem of it shutting down while in use. Just a problem starting it up.
