sound trouble

in november, i built my daughter a desktop for her Christmas present. until today, everything had worked as expected. today, she for the first time plugged earbuds (known good units) into the front port. but they are completely silent. i looked around thru various settings, but i can not find anything that is related to the front panel. she has speakers plugged into the rear audio port, which work fine. we don't have to unplug the rear audio in order for the front plug to work do we? this has an MSI H110M pro-vd plus mobo.

Did you plug in the case's front audio connector onto the motherboard?

Well, that was 5 months ago. i THINK so, but without opening the computer up, i can not be certain. i know that i did not test them when i assembled it, as i assembled it in the unheated garage at just above freezing. i want to be sure it is not a setting or software issue first, since removing the computer from its home will cause me pain. i really have to stop buying computer desks that place the computer down in a spot that is inaccessible.
