Sound problem?

Ive been using a AMD based desktop for 18 months or so now with no major problems however recently, during gameplay (specifically WIC, FS2004 and FSX but others as well), the whole PC freezes and the sound seems to freeze much like a stuck CD.
The keyboard also stops responding and I have to do a hard reboot (which I hate)
I have removed and reinstalled the latest video and sound drivers as well as updating Direct X but to no avail.
It happens at a random time (up to approx 10 mins of playing time)
Everything else seems to be working fine.
I check regularly for virus/spyware (Zone alarm PRO) and run a bog standard XP Pro setup.
Basic specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3400 Nvidia 6500
1024MB DDR ram
520GB HDD
On Board AC'97 sound chip.

Please help its driving me nuts....

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Post these logs in the Analyze area for our Security Team to look thru and let you know what steps to take.

Im not sure abour minidump, there are no .dmp files in the minidump folder.

The PC is crashing now when I run anz graphic intensive application including Google Earth so perhaps not the sound problem.
Its not an occasional fault though, Its happening every time I run a graphics heavy program now..

OK, So far I have updated every driver I could find. No joy. Then suspecting posible thermal issues Opens and cleaned the pc (heatsink, fans etc) - still the PC locks up.
I posted the hijack log for the techies in the software forums and It passed all tests, so no malware.

Bah..............

So you suspect the problem is sound related, well theres an easy way to test that theory - disable the sound card and see if the games still crash. If they don't then its a pretty good bet that its the sound card. You might try reseating the card but it might just be bad.
If the games still crash with the soundcard disabled then might be worth looking at other suspects.

Well have you been able to stick a spare vid card in there and see what happens? Or onboard video if you've got it.

What happens when you run the Direct X video tests in DXDIAG, any errors or anything?

I'm thinking it's hardware at this point and I'm looking at the graphics card right now especially since this is happening only when you're running 3d apps.

OK, the sound card when disabled makes no diffrence. So I found a nice freeware app called speedfan and my GPU is running at 81 when idle.
So I guess thts that.
There is only a heatsink on this card, no fan. When i upgraded my CPU cooler a while ago I tried to get a fan for the card but apparently it does not exist.
Pooh..
O well, anyone reccommend a good cheap card?
Ive always gone for nvidia.
