Default sound failure

My PC sound has suddenly failed.
I have onboard sound on the motherboard.
Speakers are OK, as I have tested a new set.
No yellow exclamation errors in device manager.
PC is only 14 months old.

Are there any diagnostic tools that I can use for checking for this error on mobo etc.

try re-installing drivers.

Does everything else on your mobo work?

After nearly a month this has occurreed again, and worse, after reinstall 3 times hasn't fixed it hasn't been resolved. After the 2nd & 3rd reinstallations, the sound reappeared for the windows shutdown, but upon restart there was no sound again.
Anybody any ideas?

yes, should I visit manufacturers website and get updated version, if available?
Will try when I get home after work.
What happens if there is no updates available?
