Default Sound card issue?

My friend's computer has been doing odd things with audio, that I faintly know of happening to other people in the past. For a while, her sound worked fine, but then seemingly out of nowhere it got extremely quiet to the point that even when every setting was turned all the way up, it was softer than a whisper. Recently, however, for again seemingly no reason, the sound is now deafeningly loud. To give you an idea, at a setting of 8/100 on the speaker nob is about equal to what the maximum volume was when it worked correctly. I've tried having them replace drivers with many different ones, and I'm down to the solution of just getting them a sound card, as theirs is onboard. Unless, of course, I can get a solution here.
