Default Is this a sign of a bad boot drive?

When my computer boots up to xp desktop my icons more often then not appear slowly one at a time. Or it will load ok but, then all icons disappear and come back slowly without no pic on icon? Is this a program running in background problem or a bad hd?

Boot Drive is a: WD Sata II 640 gig

Thoughts

Thank You

Try running chkdsk on it, it should find any problems with the drive and avoid them.
