Recover Over Written Data?

I formatted my PC about a year and a half ago because of a virus. During the process I lost alot of photos and video files that were on my hard drive. I know most of the data's probably overwritten however, do you think its possible to recover any or all the data that i lost?

After all this time I doubt it, as you say, the data is mostly going to be overwritten by now.
