Default Random restarts and freezes

I have a netbook. its a gateway model nt20 with windows xp sp3 installed. i got it for free because it was "broken". when i first used it, nothing seemed to be wrong however, then it decided to reboot it self for no apparent reason. It will also randomly freeze up and the screen will be a random color. Any help?

sounds like it could be a bad component, either the gpu or the motherboard.

also if you have the time/energy try and reinstall xp (if possible).

How old is the netbook?
